Research Experience for Undergraduates
This research experience program will provide undergraduate students with training in science education research.The goal of this project is to familiarize future researchers and educators with research methods used to evaluate teaching tools for biology. In additional, participants will have an opportunity to work with the research team to develop their own research directions.
You will aid in ongoing research evaluating the efficacy of computer-based interactive simulations at teaching biological concepts. You will also aid in efforts to identify common misconceptions about topics in biology (to learn more about our approach, visit our publications page. Your responsibilities will include literature reviews, questionnaire design and test construction, interviews, coordination of research subjects, and data analysis and presentation. We are seeking two undergraduate researchers:
- One student with a strong background in ecology
- One student with a strong background in education
Compensation and Hours
You will work under Dr. Joel K. Abraham, an educational researcher with SimBiotic Software and a postdoctoral research affiliate with the Scheller Teacher Education Program at MIT. You will be expected to dedicate an average of 10 hours of time/week to the project, and must be able to come to MIT at least once a week.
You will be paid $4800 for your participation in the research experience (November 1, 2009 through May 1, 2010).
Eligibility
We invite applications from undergraduate students who have completed at least two years of study towards a bachelor's degree, and will still be undergraduates through Spring 2010. Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. and its possessions.We encourage applications from all students who meet the eligibility requirements.
